George VI General Service Medal with Clasp "Palestine" named to: 5496219. PTE. H. HINES. HAMPS. R.

Sergeant Harry Hines served in the 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment in Palestine prior to WWII, earning this GSM. He died of wounds serving with the same battalion, on 9 April 1943 in Tunisia. The Battalion saw some particularly hard fighting during late 1942 and early 1943 - in and around Tebourba. Hines was likely with the battalion during the 1940 campaign in France and Belgium and would have been evacuated from Dunkirk in May/June.

Online research indicates that his WWII Medals (1939-45 Star, Africa Star, War Medal) were sent to Mrs. J. Anderson, 38 Glengate, KIRRIEMUIR, Angus, Scotland. On the CWGC Sgt Hines is listed as the husband of Jemima Hines - his wife likely remarried and was an Anderson by the time she received her late husband's medals in 1950.

The medal appears to have been officially corrected. The service number and rank remains untouched but the initials, surname and unit show clear signs of having been filed down and re-impressed. There is an annotation on the GSM roll that may explain this, but its significance is unknown to us.
