British War Medal, Victory Medal, 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, War Medal 1939-45 with MiD Oak Leaf. King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct plastic badge. WWI medals named: 13175 D.A. P.S. WILLIAMS. D.H. R.N.R.

Philip Smith Williams was born in Sunderland, Durham in 1897. Initially joining the Royal Navy in September, 1916, he soon transferred to the Royal Naval Reserve and served with the RNR to the end of WWI. Shortly after the war, Williams began service in the Merchant Navy, earning his Second Mate Certificate in 1923 and his First Mate Certificate in 1925.

During the Second World War, Williams was the Chief Officer on the Lieutenant Robert Mory (steam cargo ship) which was attacked by German Bombers on 10 February 1942. For his actions during this attack and aftermath, Williams was awarded a commendation for brave conduct (later changed to the King's Commendation).

The collection contains his medals, the King's Commendation plastic insignia in original betstowal box and mailing envelope and documentation cards, the original commendation certificate in mailing envelope, lettery from the admiralty advising him of his award, and a letter from his employer congratulating him on his award.

A fine and scarce Merchant Navy gallantry group.
