Victory Medal named to: J.115. W. Coombes. P.O. R.N.
William George Coombes was born in Devonport, Devonshire in 1891. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1909. Before the First World War he served in the battleships HMS Agamemnon and Hiberia. He was at HMS Dolphin the RN's submarine school in 1916. Petty Officer Coombes was lost aboard HM Submarie E30 when that vessel sank after hitting a German mine on 22 November 1916. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Memorial.
