Garnet Rankin was born in Perth County, Ontario and living in North Bay, Ontario when he joined the Canadian Engineers in Saint John, Quebec. He had four years previous service in the 2nd Field Company, Canadian Engineers (Militia) and was a civil engineer by profession. He served in the 123rd Battalion (Pioneers) and other engineer units through to the end of the war.
