Charles Ruthven Flack was born in Hagersville, Ontario and living in Edmonton, Alberta when he joined the 196th Battalion there in February, 1916. He served overseas with the 46th Battalion until he was severely wounded during the Battle of Passchendaele, in October, 1917. His wounds necessitated the amputation of his right leg.
