Robert Spencer was born in McLean, Saskatchewan and a member of the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Canadian Militia. He joined the 179th Battalion CEF at Winnipeg, in December, 1915. He served overseas in the 43rd Battalion and was wounded in June, 1917 and eventually discharged as medically unfit due to his wounds.
