Johathan Swainson was born in Liverpool, England. He originally joined the 68th Battalion CEF (Regina) at Indian Head, Saskatchewan, and served overseas with the 42nd Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) but was invalided out suffering from shell shock. He then joined the 240th Battalion and proceeded overseas once again, seeing additional service in the Canadian Forestry Corps.
