John Brown was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He joined the New Brunswick Machine Gun Draft in Saint John, NB in March, 1917. He served with the 26th Battalion in France and was wounded (GSW arm) on 8 August, 1918 - during the Battle of Amiens.
