James Pitt Yates was born in Leeds, England. He had served for 5 years in the 3rd West Yorkshire Volunteers before immigrating to Canada. He joined the 46th Battalion CEF in Regina, Saskatchewan in September, 1915. He served overseas with the 13th Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) and was listed as Missing in Action on 8 October, 1916. His body was evidently recovered and he was determined to have been Killed in Action on 8 October, 1916 and is buried in ADANAC Military Cemetery, France.
