John Pirie Gordon was born in Uxbridge, Ontario. He was a butcher by trade and had 3 years of service with the 34th Rifles of the Canadian Militia (Whitby) when he joined the 46th Battalion in Regina in March, 1915. He served on the Western Front with the 13th Battalion CEF (Royal Highlanders of Canada) and was wounded on the Somme in September, 1916. Due to his wounds, he was discharged, medically unfit, in April 1918.
