William Joseph Smith was born in Redcar, Yorkshire in 1882. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October, 1901. Prior to WWI he served on a number of HM Ships including: Impregnable, Minotaur, Agincourt, Hannibal, Camperdown, Duke of Wellington, Prince of Wales, Excellent, Pandora and Ameythst. During this time he was advanced steadily in rank eventually being promoted to Petty Officer. He served in HMS ST. VINCENT between 1913 and 1916, during which time he was awarded his Good Shooting Medal.
In late 1916 he was advanced to Bosun and served the remainder of WWI in HMS Excellent and HMS Iron Duke. For his wartime service, Smith was awarded a 1914-15 Trio. He was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit in 1924 and sadly died shortly thereafter in 1925.
