William Grover was born in Allbrook, and living in Eastbrook, Hampshire in 1882. He joined the Royal Navy and a Boy 2nd Class in March 1899. He had been advanced to Ordinary Seaman by the end of 1900 and continued to progress through the ranks, whilst serving in a number of different ships and shore establishments. He was awarded his Good Shooting Medal in 1911 for his proficiency in firing the 9.2 inch gun whilst serving in HMS Minotaur. During the First World War he served mostly in the battlecruiser HMS Courageous, seeing action at the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1917. He continued to serve after the war as a Petty Officer and was then advanced to Chief Petty Officer shortly before being shore pensioned in 1924.
His group is accompanied by a copied photo of Grover in uniform (circa 1920s) and wearing his medals, and a quantity of original documents, including:
- Certificate of Service, documenting all his ships, promotions and details of his service
- Educational Certificate for Petty Officer
- Motoring Certificate - Naval Employment Agency
- Trade Certificate - Seaman Branch - Gunnery Ratings
- Gunnery / Gunnery and Torpedo History Sheets (Total of 5) documenting his gunnery and torpedo efficiency.
A well-documented and complete Naval Good Shooting group that would be difficult to upgrade.
