Alick Bardot was born in London, England and living in Victoria, British Columbia when he enrolled in the 97th Battalion in Toronto, January 1916. His attestation paper indicates he had previous service in the 13th  (9 years) and 19th Hussars (4 years) and that he worked as a cook. Bardot has several CEF attestation papers in his file, including with the 97th Battalion and CASC, however, his path to service overseas appears to have been through initially joining the Canadian Permanent Force having been found medically unfit by the CEF. He was assigned Permanent Force number 6622, which was later changed to the number that appears on his medals when he was transferred to the CEF. He served in France with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse from April, 1918 until the end of the war. After the Great War he served in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for a time, and then became a well known character on Vancouver Island.
