George Lear was born in Newton Abbot, Derbyshire, England and had previously served in the Volunteers. He joined the 20th Battalion CEF in Toronto in November, 1914. He arrived in England with the battalion in May, 1915. He remained in England for about a year, during which time he was transferred to the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps. Initially serving in both No.1 and No.2 Veterinary Hospitals, he proceeded to France with the former and served with that unit, and others, including CAVC Remounts until invalided to Canada due to sickness. A scarce pair to the CAVC.
