Kenneth Milton Porter was born in Morganville, Near Bear River, in Digby County, Nova Scotia. He joined the 219th (Highland) Battalion at Bear River in April, 1916. He proceeded in a draft to France, joining the 42nd Battalion (Royal Higlanders of Canada) in December, 1916. On 9 April, 1917 during the attack on Vimy Ridge, Porter suffered a GSW to his left ear, leaving him badly wounded, partially deaf and concussed. He was evactuated to the UK and eventually back to Canada. His medical records indicate he lost all hearing in his left ear as a result of his wounds. In 1919, he was in a car accident and was thrown some 60 feet from the car onto the rocky shore near Bear River, NS. His injuries resulted in paralysis of his legs and ensuing infection of his bladder and kidneys. He died of pyleonephritis scepticaemia in 1922 at Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax, NS and is buried in Morganville Baptist (Public) Cemetery, Hillsboro, Nova Scotia.
