British War Medal, Victory Medal named to: 1015616 A/BSM S.N. RAE. C.M.G.C.
Stephen (Samuel on some documents) Norman Rae was born in Blackburn, Lancashire and served in the 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Regiment 1900-03 according to his CEF attestation paper. When he joined the CEF he was living in Dawson City, Yukon Territory and working as a stone cutter. He had his physical examination at Dawson in April and attested to the CEF on 1 July, 1916 in Sidney, BC. He appears to have initially joined the 231st Battalion (Seaforth Highlanders) but his file states he was transferred to the Yukon Infantry Company in October, 1916. He served with the 2nd Canadian Motor Machine Gun Battalion in France, and was promoted to Acting Battalion Sergeant Major. In September, 1918 he relinquished this appointment and proceeded to the UK as a Cadet with the Canadian Machine Gun Depot. However, it appears the war ended before he could receive a commission and his rank on his discharge document is Cadet. His service file indicates that he applied for replacement medals in 1971 by prepayment. The naming style on these indicates these are the pair issued to him at that time. A scarce pair to a member of the Yukon Infantry Company.
