James Gordon Johnston was born in Toronto, Ontario. He joined the 201st Battalion, CEF at Toronto and was transferred first to the 198th Battalion and then to the 67th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. He served with the 6th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery on the Western Front until being accepted on probation in a cadet unit of the Royal Air Force. He ended the war as a Cadet in the RAF and was discharged in Toronto in February, 1919.
