Born in Cork County, Ireland, Herwald Dorrien Mello previously served in the Cape Town Highlanders during the Boer War (QSA) He joined the 68th Overseas Depot Field Battery in Vancouver in November 1916. Drafted to the 3rd DAC he served with them in France from May 1917.
