Nelson Patrick Doyle was born in Wardsville, Middlesex County, Ontario. He was working as a banker when he joined the 91st Battalion, CEF at St. Thomas, Ontario in February, 1916. He was transferred to the 2nd Battalion and served in France until he suffered a severe shrapnel wound to the head in May, 1917. He was hospitalized and recovered, returning to his unit only to be killed in action on 3 September, 1918. His CEF Circumstances of Death card provides the following detail: During an attack in the vicinity of Paviland Wood, after having reached the objective and about to consolidate, he was hit in the thigh by a piece of enemy shrapnel which penetrated his stomach. The would was quickly and carefully dressed, but he succumbed in a few minutes. He is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.
