British War Medal, Victory Medal named to: 757393 PTE. F. OAKES 19-CAN. INF.
Born in Oldham, Lancashire, England, Frederick Oakes joined the 120th Battalion (City of Hamilton) in December 1915 stating that he was 18 years old. He was transferred to the 134th Battalion (48th Highlanders) in England and then proceeded to France with the 19th Battalion in May 1917. Itβs not clear how it was determined but his actual DoB was 2 November 1899 and he was returned to England as a Minor, seeing service in the Young Soldiers Battalion. Interesting example of one of the many youngsters who volunteered to serve in the CEF.
