John Arthur Stiles was born in Stilesville, New Brunswick (near Moncton). He joined the 55th Battalion CEF at Sussex, NB in May, 1915. He was transferred to the 31st Battalion and served with them on the Western Front. In September, 1916 he suffered a severe wound to his shoulder. Having recovered, he returned to the battalion in 1917 and was subsequently reported as missing on 6 November. He was later recorded as having been killed on or since 6 November, 1917. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing.
