Walter Saxelby was born in Lincolnshire, England. He joined the 28th Battalion and proceeded overseas with them. Landing at Boulogne on 18 September 1915, he was with the Battalion during their first tour of duty in the trenches. Saxelby was killed in action 8 October 1915 when the Germans detonated two large mines beneath the trenches occupied by the 28th Battalion at Kemmel. He is buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery. An early casualty, and one of the first suffered by the 28th (Northwest) Battalion.
