Walter Thomas William Jarmain was born in West Ham, Essex. He joined the Royal Navy in January, 1913. He was serving aboard the cruiser HMS Hawke when she was sunk by German U-Boat U-9 in the North Sea on October 15th, 1914 - one of only 70 survivors of the crew of 594. He was then assigned to HMS Coquette and was one of 22 of the crew that was killed when the destroyer hit a mine laid by another U-Boat, UC-10 on March 7th, 1916. He is commemorated on the Chatham Memorial.
