John James Symon was born in Newcastle on Tyne, England. He joined the 32nd Battalion in Winnipeg in December, 1914. He proceeded to France in a draft to the 5th Battalion in May, 1915. He was wounded at La Basse in June, 1915 (GSW to left hand) and found physically unfit for further service.
