Richard Shrubsole was born in Boughton, Kent, England. He was working in Toronto as a chauffeur and was a member of the Governor General's Body Guard (Canadian Militia) when he joined the 58th Battalion CEF in July 1915. He proceeded to France with the battalion in February, 1916. Shrubsole advanced through the ranks quickly, being first appointed Lance Corporal, then Corporal and then Lance Sergeant by July, 1916. He suffered his first wound (Shrapnel wound to head) in April, 1916. He was subsequently wounded again in July, 1915 (Shrapnel wound to legs) and a third time in December, 1916 (GSW to thigh). In April, 1918 he was transferred to the Army Gymnastic Staff with whom he was appointed A/CSM / A/WO Cl 2.
