James Thomas Murphy was born in Toronto and joined the 92nd Battalion (48th Highlanders of Canada) CEF in that city in July, 1915. He proceeded in a draft to the 42nd Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) and served with that unit on the Western Front until he was wounded on 6 October, 1916. He died of his wounds on 15 October 1916 and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
