William John Bogues was born in Listowel, Perth County, Ontario. He had 3 years service with the 21st Regiment (Essex Fusiliers) of the Canadian Militia when he joined the 17th Field Ambulance, Canadian Army Medical Corps at Valcartier in September, 1914. He arrived in France with the 1st Canadian Field Ambulance in early April, 1915 and remained with that unit until the end of the Great War.
