Genvey Croft was born in Cranbook, Kent, England. Previously a wheelright, he joined the Regular Army (Royal West Kent Regiment) at Maidstone in August, 1905. He served in Malta and Singapore before proceeding to India in 1908. In 1913, while serving with the 2nd battalion of the regiment at Peshawar, his conduct was noted as "exemplary" recorded that he had served for 3 years as a pioneer and was reliable and trustworthy with no recorded offences committed. Having completed his 9 years service, he was transferred to the Army Reserve in early 1914. Croft was mobilised in August, 1914 and served in the 1st and 3rd Battalions, Royal West Kent Regiment. He was discharged from the army 24 July, 1916 as being permanently medically unfit for further service.
