Herbert James Tickell was born in London, England. He was a member of the Canadian Militia (53rd Sherbrooke Regiment) when he joined the 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles) CEF in November, 1914. He proceeded to France with the battalion, suffering from "Shell Shock" in July, 1916. He was attached to the 5th Canadian Trench Mortar Battery in November, 1916. Tickell was wounded (GSW arm) on 9 April, 1917 the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
