John Ritchie Smith was born in Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham, England and served in the 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He died of woulds on 11 July, 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt L'Abbe, France.
