Samuel Dominick Bulteel was born in Kalacherra, India. He attended the Cranleigh School, and then RMA Woolwich 1911-12. He arrived in France on 20 August, 1914 and served initially in the 120th Battery, 27th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He later served in the 45th Brigade. The brigade war diary for 5 April, 1917 reveals: "Major S D Bulteel cmdg. 1st Battery, RFA was killed whilst searching for an O.P. in vicinity of W18d. He was shot in the head by a sniper believed to have been in W18b." Major Bulteel was Mentioned in Despatches 1 January, 1916.
