Hobson Dunkley Smith was born in Lincolnshire, England when he joined the Canadian Railway Construction Corps in Saint John, New Brunswick in March, 1915. He had three years previous service in the Royal Engineers. Smith served on the Western front with the CORCC until the end of the war. He was discharged in Canada in early 1919 and immediately re-enrolled in the Corps of Canadian Military Police, serving in the "Special Guard" until late 1919. 1914-15 Stars to the CORCC are uncommon.
