John Alfred Chapman was born in Heston, Middlesex, England. He joined the 35th Battalion in Toronto in April, 1915. He proceeded to France with the 3rd (Toronto) Battalion and was wounded no fewer than four times, earning 4 wound stripes as per his discharge certificate.
