Herbert Vaughan Lewis was born in Montreal, Quebec. He had 3 years service in the 43rd Regiment (Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa) of the Canadian Militia when he joined the 27th Battalion CEF at Winnipeg, Manitoba in October, 1914. He proceeded to France with the battalion in 1915 and was quickly promoted to Corporal and then Serjeant. He was granted a commission in 1917 and served the remainder of the war as a Lieutenant. He was wounded twice in 1918, the first time being severe gas poisoning and the second a shrapnel wound.
