Percy Wood was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. He joined the 20th Battalion (Central Ontario) in Toronto in November, 1914. He arrived in France with the battalion in September, 1915. During a patrol in November, 1916 he accidentally wounded himself with a flare gun and was charged on account of his carelessness. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery (citation dated 28 August, 1917): "For gallantry and devotion to duty in action. During an assault on the enemy, he exhibited great courage in leading his section forward in the face of heavy hostile machine gun fire. He continuously set a splendid example of courage and devition to his men." He was later wounded in action but survived the war and was demobilised in 1919.
