John Thomas Murphy was born in Liverpool, England and had 7 years previous service in the Liverpool Militia prior to serving in the First World War. He joined the 18th Battalion at Windsor, Ontario in October, 1914 and served with the battalion in France and Flanders. He was wounded in March, 1916 suffering a shrapnel wound to the head.
