William Bruce was born in Devonport, Devon. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy in 1835, serving in HMS Portland. Reaching 18 years of age, he was advanced to Ordinary Seaman in 1838 serving in HMS Hercules (18 August 1838 - 13 November 1839). As an Able Seaman he served in HMS San Josef (13 December 1839 - 5 February 1840) before joining HMS Nimrod on 6 February 1840. Bruce was discharged from Nimrod on 22 November 1844 as "Paid Off" with his conduct recorded as "Good" and for his service he was awarded the China War Medal.

Bruce continued to serve in HMS Actaeon on anti-slaver operations off the coast of Africa in 1845-47 and earned his Baltic Medal for service in HMS La Hogue.

97 China 1842 medals issued to HMS Nimrod, which also carried 20 R.M. officers and men.
