Egypt Medal (J. May. Nl Schoolmr. H.M.S. "Orion".), RN LSGC (James May Naval Schoolmr. H.M.S. Warrior), Khedive's Star dated 1882, unnamed as issued.

James May was born in Landport, Hampshire, England on 12 February 1853 and learned the trade of cabinet maker before embarking on his naval career. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1868. He was advanced to Boy 1st Class in 1869 and then appointed Naval Schoolmaster in 1872. He was further promoted to Head Schoolmaster in 1886 in which capactiy he continued to serve until his discharge in 1904.

May served in the following ships, HMS Implacable, St. Vincent, Duke of Wellington, Sultan, Warrior, Hercules, Boscawen, Orion and Ganges.

His Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was awarded to him in 1881.

He retired at age 51 with more than 36 years of service in the RN.
