Victorian Royal Navy LSGC with wide suspsension and 1848 Date below bust (John McCarthy. Masr. at Arms. H.M.S. Sloop Childers, 22 Yrs. )

John McCarthy was born at Cove of Cork, Ireland in 1804. Prior to joining the Royal Navy he had six years service in the foreign mercantile marine service. He first entered the RN on HMS Prince Regent on 4 August, 1825. He subsequently served on HMS Albion, Mersey, Ranger, North Star, Magnificent, Imogene and Thalia between 1825 and 1838. He then served as a Boatswain's Mate on HMS Hastings from 1938-42. His final ship was the Sloop Childers, in which he served from 9 March 1846 to 28 July 1849 as Master at Arms. He received his LSGC medal upon discharge from Childers to pension, having completed 24 years of service.

His service entitled him to a Naval General Service Medal with clasps "Navarino" and "Syria" as well as a St. Jean d'Acre Medal - however, these were never claimed.

Medal is on a short length of what appears to be original ribbon. Approximately 100 dated ‘1848’ long service medals were awarded, with around 30 known to be extant.
