Alfred Habgood was born at Winbourne, Dorset in 1858. He joined the Royal Navy in 1876 as a Boy 2nd Class. As an Able Seaman with the sub-ratings Seaman Gunner 1st Class as well as Torpedo Operator, he was present at the Battles of El-Teb on 29 February 1884 and Tamaai on 13 March 1884 as part of the Naval Brigade.

One of only 23 El-Teb_Tamaai clasps awarded to H.M.S. Hecla.
