A Queen's South Africa Medal named to: 40349 TPR. S. SPENCER. CAN. SCTS.

Samuel John Spencer was born in Liverpool, England. He served in the Canadian Scouts in South Africa earning his Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps Orange Free State, Cape Colony and Transvaal. The medal rolls indicate he was also entitled to the South Africa 1902 clasp but that his address could not be traced. Presumably he never received it. He has a service file as he attempted to join the Canadian Mounted Rifles for service in South Africa in 1901 but was released as "not being likely to become an efficient soldier". His service in South Africa in 1902 appears to have also been with the Canadian Scouts as the medal roll indicates no service in other units. At some point he was "wounded in the leg" during his service in South Africa (CEF service file refers). He joined the CEF in Toronto in 1916 stating he had 16 month previous service in the Canadian Scouts as well as three years in the 10th Royal Grenadiers and saw service in France and Flanders with the Canadian Field Artillery, earning the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
