Henry Charles Cole was born in Dalhousie, India. He joined the 2nd Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment at Portsmount in February 1897. At the time of his attestation Cole was 15 years and 4 months old and was appointed as a drummer. He served in South Africa, and then in India but was invalided back to England and released as medically unfit for further service in 1904.
