Pre-WWI Germany - Mecklenburg-Schwerin - Bronze Medal of Merit - First (pre-1872) Type

A scarce pre-1872 version of the Friedrich Franz II Bronze Medal of Merit from the Grand Dutchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Verdienstmedaille in Bronze Friedrich Franz II). The medal bears the maker's name of "W. Kullrich F." below Friedrich Franz's bust. Some of the delicate gilding remains - a feature of only the first version of this medal, the second type was in light bronze.

The Medal of Merit of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II was established in three grades on February 28, 1859. The medal was awarded to civilians and military personnel regardless of rank for good and loyal service to the benefit of the Grand Ducal House and the Fatherland. It was also awarded for individual, particularly honorable deeds and outstanding achievements in science, art, and industry.
