McNeil (McNeill on some documents) Ross was born in Nethy Bridge, Inverness, Scotland. He joined the Seaforth Highlanders in 1886 and arrived in India in 1888. He spent time at various garrisons in India over the next several years. He was awarded the India Medal with Hazara 1891 clasp for the Hazara Field Force operations against the Hassanzais and Akazais in the Black Mountains. Ross transferred to the reserve - in 1895 and was released in 1895. He joined the Scottish Royal Reserve Regiment in 1900. He saw service with the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders during the First World War, arriving in France in December, 1914. He served with that battalion, the Labour Corps and in 1919 he appears to have rejoined the army for a short period, serving with the Royal Engineers, but was discharged in 1920.
