A sterling silver ID bracelet with an RCAF crest/badge and engraved: May S. N. - R108735
Stuart Newton May was born in Weston, Ontario in 1921. He joined the RCAF in 1940, initially as a non-commissioned member, but was later commissioned and served overseas as an officer. May undertook his pilot training at Number 14 Service Flying Training School and after receiving his wings he initially was retained in Canada as an instructor. Proceeding to the UK in 1943, he joined 418 Squadron RCAF flying the de Haviland Mosquito. During his service in 1944, May was credited with shooting down 5 V-1 rockets and damaging a sixth.
His last mission was a raid on an airfield in Czechoslovakia - May was shot down but survived,. He and his navigator evaded the Germans and escaped the crash site, eventually making contact with partisans who gave them assistance and medical care. May spent six months with these partisans, and had quite a harrowing adventure before finally returning to the UK. There is much information about him online - the link below provides an excellent overview of his service, biographical details and photos:
A loop is missing to attach one side of the bracelet.
