Gordon Hutchinson Speer was born in Toronto, Canada. He joined the 54th Depot Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery at Toronto in February 1916. He served in France with the 1st Brigade, CFA and was gassed in May 1917, requiring medical treatment. He was discharged medically unfit.
