Orillia’s Recognition of War Service 1914-1919 Medal engraved on reverse: Lieut. B. H. Mainer – 177th Bn. – 1916-17

Benjamin Hewitt Mainer was born in Orillia, Ontario in 1883. He worked as a hardware merchant and was a serving officer in the 35th Regiment Canadian Militia (Simcoe Foresters) when he joined the 177th Battalion CEF at Midland in April 1916. He resigned his commission in 1917 for reasons unknown and was discharged from the CEF having not proceeded overseas. Mainer continued to serve in the regiment and passed his Major’s qualification course in 1929. His CAFLSM was awarded in 1930.
