Walter Gordon York was born in Rudge, England. He was serving in the 101st Edmonton Fusiliers when he joined the 23rd Battalion CEF in November 1914. He proceeded to the 14th Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment) in a draft in May 1915. He suffered a serious gun shot wound to the head later in 1915, and further injured his head accidentally following surgery. As a result of his wounds, he was invalided to Canada and discharged. He managed to re-join the CEF in 1916 but it was soon determined that he should not have been allowed to re-join due to his injuries and was subsequently discharged permanently.
