Ernest Stubbs was born in Iford, Essex, England in 1872. Prior to immigrating to Canada, Stubbs served 12 years in the Devonshire Regiment joining in 1891. His service with the Devons included over 6 years in India as well as nearly 3 years in South Africa. For this service he was awarded the India General Service Medal with clasps ‘Punjab Frontier 1897-98’ and ‘Tirah 1897-98’ as well as the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps ‘Relief of Ladysmith’, ‘Laing’s Nek’, ‘Tugela Heights’, ‘Transvaal’ and ‘Orange Free State’ and the King’s South Africa with the usual 2 year clasps. Stubbs joined the 27th Battalion CEF at Winnipeg in December 1914 and indicated he belonged to the 106th Winnipeg Light Infantry of the Canadian Militia. He served in France with the 27th from September 1915 and save for a sprained knee, appears to have survived the war unscathed. He was discharged upon demobilisation in 1919.
