British War Medal, Victory Medal (190387 PTE. J. Cedar. 87-CAN. INF.)
Joseph Cedar was born in Cedar, Ohio, USA. He was living in Toledo when he joined the 91st Battalion CEF at Amherstberg, Ontario in June 1916. He proceeded overseas in a draft to the 87th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) and suffered a GSW to the chest at Courcelette, resulting in shrapnel being lodged in his left lung. This severe wound resulted in his hospitalization and inability to speak for 5 weeks. He was returned to Canada in 1917.
His service file suggests that Joseph Cedar was an alias and his name was in fact James Bourdeau, and that he lived in Tilbury, Ontario after the war.
